State Office of Education looking for new way to teach math
The state is looking into a different way to teach math in the classrooms.
The State Office of Education says math score are too low. So, they looked to see who has the highest international math test scores. They found them in Singapore.
Education Appropriations Committee Chair Howard Stephenson says, "We were very impressed with their approach and their success. They are number one in the world in teaching math."
Stephenson says the Singapore method doesn't use long and complicated problems to teach math principles. He says, "In a lot of ways, it's the math your parents and grandparents worked without a lot of invention and frills."
He says the curriculum is under consideration for now, and the office of education hasn't yet decided if, or when it will be implemented.
