WASHINGTON (AP) — The Eastern storm began gently enough but forecasters warn much heavier snow and wind gusting to 50 mph should create blinding whiteout conditions once the storm joins up with a low pressure system off the coast. Two feet or more of snowfall is forecast for Washington and Baltimore, and nearly as much for Philadelphia. Drifts could be much higher. New York City's expected total was upped Friday to a foot or more. At least seven people have died so far.
TORONTO (AP) — The Royal Canadian Mounted Police aren't releasing details about a gunman arrested outside a high school in an aboriginal community in northern Saskatchewan. Authorities say the gunman opened fire at the school and a second location, leaving four people dead, including two of the gunman's siblings and at least two injured.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A follower of cult leader Charles Manson will be staying in jail. Gov. Jerry Brown rejected parole for a third time Friday for Bruce Davis, convicted of the 1969 slayings of musician Gary Hinman and stuntman Donald "Shorty" Shea. He was not involved in the more notorious killings of actress Sharon Tate and six others. Brown says the 73-year-old Davis remains a danger to public safety.
COMPTON, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say an animal cruelty complaint led to the discovery of a human skull and eight containers with potentially more at a Los Angeles-area shop that sells spiritual items. Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. Steve Katz says there's no evidence of a homicide and that it appears the skull may have been purchased from a legal source and was being used for a religious ceremony. He says it's unclear whether animal remains were found.
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — A South Florida police officer was shot and wounded but suffered non-life-threatening injuries in what his chief describes as an ambush. Miami Gardens Police Chief Antonio Brooklen told reporters that officers arrested a suspect after a short car chase. Brooklen says no shots were fired by police and the suspect's motive is unknown.
