CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada regulators are denying requests to suspend controversial new rates for rooftop solar power customers. Rooftop solar companies say they've laid off hundreds of employees and stopped selling panels in Nevada because of the hike that took effect Jan. 1. The Public Utilities Commission said they sympathize with the laid-off workers. But they also suggested solar companies were partly to blame for selling panels to thousands in recent months while apparently not warning people they could see big changes in their bill in the new year.

CORALVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Jeb Bush says he misjudged the intensity of anger among Republican voters before his White House campaign. He says the country in 2016 is "dramatically different" than in past elections. But the former Florida governor insists he's still a viable candidate. Bush reaffirms his commitment to conservative social issues.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — An American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to New York City has been diverted to the Las Vegas airport. The Las Vegas Sun reports that the crew on Flight 256 reported smelling smoke in the cockpit. The plane landed safely at McCarran International Airport. An airport spokeswoman says the Clark County Fire Department found no fire or smoke aboard the plane.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Authorities have called off the search for two fishermen who went missing near Reno on New Year's Day. A Pyramid Lake Fire and Rescue emergency response coordinator identified the missing men as 38-year-old Ryan Osberg and 31-year-old Robert Glennon. He says the search will not continue unless there are new leads on where to look.
