MILLCREEK — A man who wandered from his home on New Year's Day was found dead in a nearby back yard Saturday afternoon..

Mark Allen Miller, 62, was not dressed for the extreme cold temperatures when he was last seen at his home, near 3619 S. 900 East, according to Unified Police Det. Jared Richardson. He said Miller was reported to have been going through alcohol withdrawals and had suffered a head injury recently.

Friends had tried to prevent Miller from leaving the home, but were unsuccessful, Richardson said. Cause of death remained under investigation.

Dozens of officers, including search and rescue dogs and the Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter, assisted in a search through the night and until Miller's body was found at about 1:30 p.m. near 3600 S. Christine Street (1050 E.).

Richardson said police were "saddened to learn that Mr. Miller passed away."

Miller left his home around 8 p.m. wearing jeans, a T-shirt and slippers. Friday night and early Saturday saw temperatures in the single digits around Salt Lake City, according to the National Weather Service.

Police had asked for the public's help on Saturday to find Miller, believing he was in danger. The search was called off when the body was found.
