SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah lawmakers are working on a $2 million pilot program to attract and keep teachers in remote public schools near American Indian reservations, where turnover can top 50 percent. Vernal Republican Sen. Kevin Van Tassell wants to start a grant program helping schools to attract or recruit teachers by handing out signing bonuses or boosting pay.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Meteorologists say Utah will get more snow on Christmas Day, adding to the white blanket that has ski resorts rejoicing and avalanche experts warning about dangerous conditions in the mountain backcountry. A National Weather Service forecaster says the storm tomorrow will drop a few inches of snow and bring colder temperatures that could create treacherous roads for holiday drivers. All the recent snow has greatly increased the avalanche danger.

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) — Utah police say they've arrested two people they believe were involved in a man's hit-and-run death during a trailer theft. A West Valley City police spokeswoman says officers have arrested 34-year-old Jesse Searle and 26-year-old Jeanette Miner. Neither has been charged or has an assigned attorney but Salt Lake County Jail records show they were being held on suspicion of murder, robbery and other crimes.

HONOLULU (AP) — Chase Fischer scored a career-high and Diamond Head Classic record 41 points and BYU blitzed former conference rival New Mexico 96-66 yesterday. Fischer also had a record nine 3-pointers in 14 attempts and was 8 of 9 from the foul line to surpass the 36 points Hawaii's Dwain Williams had against St. Mary's in 2009. Tim Williams and Elijah Brown had 16 points each for the Lobos (7-5)
