LAS VEGAS (AP) — Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump says temporarily banning Muslims from entering the U.S. is a matter of security, not religion. Trump defended his proposal at Tuesday night's GOP debate in Las Vegas. Rivals Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio largely spared Trump from criticism, saying they understand why Trump raised the idea of banning Muslims. But fellow candidate Jeb Bush called Trump a "chaos candidate."
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) —Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton says the American people "cannot give into fear" in the aftermath of attacks in Paris and California. Clinton on Tuesday presented her strategy to protect the homeland and prevent domestic terrorist attacks. Her plan includes proactive steps for capping Islamic State recruitment in the U.S., especially online, and for stopping potential jihadists from training overseas.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Schools in the Los Angeles area will reopen Wednesday, following threats of a large-scale jihadi attack that shut down the entire school district on Tuesday. New York City schools received the same threat, but dismissed it as a hoax and continued with classes. In LA, the threat came in the form of an email to a school board member.
BALTIMORE (AP) — A jury in Baltimore will resume deliberations Wednesday in the trial of one of six police officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray. Officer William Porter is charged with manslaughter and other offenses. Gray was arrested in April, and his neck was broken while in the back of a police van.
NEW YORK (AP) — She created a multimillion dollar catalog business that sold specialized gifts and home goods. Lillian Vernon has died at age 88. Vernon came to the United States from Germany as a Jewish immigrant fleeing the Nazis. She began her mail order business in 1951, selling inexpensive gifts and household organizers. In 1987, Lillian Vernon was the first woman-owned company to be listed on the American Stock Exchange.
