NEW YORK (AP) — Diane Sawyer's interview with Bruce Jenner when the former Olympian announced, "I am a woman," is among the 16 winners of the 2016 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards honoring work in broadcast, digital and documentary journalism.

Also winning is a PBS' Frontline documentary on transgender children and for the first time, a podcast.

That award went to WBEZ and This American Life for "Serial," which focused on the inadequacies of the criminal justice system.

Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism announced the winners on Tuesday.

The Sawyer interview was credited with spotlighting one of the year's most-discussed topics in a "substantive, sensitive" way before Jenner began publicly identifying as Caitlyn Jenner.

VICE News won for its online video that tracked a Russian soldier through his own social media posts crossing into Ukraine during the civil conflict there.

WNYC was cited for its radio series that used public data on complaints against NYPD officers.

The other winners are WBAL-TV and Jayne Miller; Al Jazeera America & Kartemquin Film; CBS News 60 Minutes; Cronkite News/Arizona PBS; HBO documentary and HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel; KMOV-TV and Craig Cheatham; the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel; WETA, Art Media, Florentine Films & Laura Ziskin Pictures; and WRAL-TV.

A special finalist citation was awarded to KCBS Radio for its expose on a San Francisco cathedral that installed an illegal watering system that soaked homeless people at night to keep them from sleeping on their doorsteps.

The awards will be presented on Jan. 19 at Columbia.
