HAWTHORNE, Calif. (AP) — The FBI is investigating a possible hate crime after police officials in the Southern California city of Hawthorne said two mosques were vandalized with paint today, and a fake grenade was left in the driveway of one of the mosques. On Friday, police arrested 23-year-old Carl Dial Jr. of Palm Desert in connection with a fire at the Islamic Center of Palm Springs.

BOSTON (AP) — The highest court in Massachusetts is being asked to decide if a judge violated the constitutional rights of a landlord when he ordered her to take a course on Islam after she was convicted of pushing her Muslim tenant down a flight of stairs in in 2012. The Supreme Judicial Court will hear arguments Jan. 8 in the case of Daisy Obi, the pastor of a Somerville church.

LYNWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in Southern California say witnesses reported seeing a man firing gunshots in the air minutes before he was shot dead Saturday by Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies. The sheriff's office released three 911 calls today. They also made public a security video showing 28-year-old Nicholas Robertson lying on the ground with a gun in his hand.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Rain and strong winds are battering much of Northern California. It's the third winter-like storm in a week. Forecasters say the higher peaks in the Sierra Nevada could see up to two feet of snow. The National Weather Service has issued a strong wind advisory for the San Francisco Bay Area where wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph have been delaying flights.

NEW YORK (AP) — With "The Force Awakens" looming, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" is notching its fourth-straight weekend atop the box office. It was a quiet weekend at movie theaters. Few studios wanted to push out a new release days before "The Force Awakens." According to studio estimates, the final chapter of the "Hunger Games" took in $11.3 million this weekend.
