SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — State regulators have closed 17 abandoned mines north of Moab.
The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining said Monday that the mines in the Klondike Bluffs area were hazardous and contained dangerous gases and unstable structures.
The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/1N1IS2M ) the old uranium and copper mines were closed in November.
Division spokeswoman Hollie Brown says the mines were targeted because they were near popular mountain bike and jeep trials.
Some mine openings were closed with grates that allow bats to fly in and out while others were backfilled completely.
