SALT LAKE CITY — Criminal charges were filed Wednesday against a former rookie Unified police officer accused of having a one-month sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl.

Regan Edward Anson, 25, was charged in 3rd District Court with five counts of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony. Prosecutors say he engaged in illegal sexual conduct with the girl between Sept. 26 and Oct. 21.

The Unified Police Department's Special Victims Unit discovered Anson's alleged actions while investigating another sexual assault case. Police believe Anson met the teen while he was on duty but had sexual contact with her on five occasions while he was off duty. Because Anson held a position of trust over the girl, he faces enhanced penalties if convicted.

Anson, who was still on probationary status at the time of his arrest, was fired from the department.

Salt Lake police, who were asked to handle the investigation, arrested him Oct. 22 as he got off a plane at the Salt Lake City International Airport, less than 48 hours after the alleged crimes were discovered.

Because of his former employment, he was booked into the Davis County Jail where he was being held Wednesday on $75,000 bail.
