SOUTH SALT LAKE — A man suffered burns over a majority of his body after a fire ignited in an auto shop Monday afternoon, fire officials said.
A heater inside the shop at 166 E. 3825 South ignited fuel that for an unknown reason spilled from the vehicle the man was working on, said South Salt Lake Deputy Fire Chief Terry Addison.
The man's age was not immediately released. Addison didn't know the man's exact condition Monday evening, but said most of his body was burned and that his wounds were "significant." A spokesman for the South Salt Lake Fire Department said the man, an employee at the auto shop, suffered third-degree burns.
One other person was in the shop and helped the man, who was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance after the fire ignited around 3 p.m.
The vehicle was reportedly on an automotive lift when the fuel began to spill. The building and equipment sustained between $20,000 and $25,000 in damage, Addison said.
Firefighters from the South Salt Lake and Murray fire departments, along with the Unified Fire Authority, easily doused the fire, he said.
