DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Institute of Arts has added digital images of ancient Middle Eastern inscribed objects from its collection to a digital cuneiform library.
The museum says translations and other information also are collected as part of the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-supported international research project is based at the University of California, Los Angeles.
DIA Collection Research Associate Lina Meerchyad translated texts, catalogued objects and compiled and shared photographs with Robert K. Englund, Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative principal investigator and professor of Assyriology at UCLA.
The DIA's revamped Ancient Middle East gallery has significant examples of cuneiform objects on view that also are detailed online. The gallery, which includes art from the ancient empires of Assyria, Babylonia Persia and others, opened this fall.
