SALT LAKE CITY — Police are asking for the public's help in locating a man they believe was involved in a gang-related shooting in June.

The shooting occurred Monday, June 29 around 11:22 p.m. near an apartment complex at 1601 W. 400 South, according to Salt Lake City police detective Dennis McGowan. A man was in his apartment when he heard a commotion outside. When the man went outside, he confronted several males who were arguing and they began to shoot at him, McGowan said.

The victim returned fire with his own handgun and was shot in the shoulder. The men fled the scene in a gray Chevrolet Impala, McGowan said. The victim was transported to a local hospital. The injuries weren't life-threatening.

Police believe Raul Contreras, 20, was involved in the shooting and that it was gang related. He is wanted by police in connection with felony aggravated assault and felony riot.

"The case is extremely complex," McGowan said. "There's so many people involved either as witnesses or involved persons or suspects or victims."

Police said he should be considered armed and dangerous. Contreras was described as a Hispanic male around 5 feet 11 inches tall and 200 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information about the location of Contreras should call the Salt Lake City Police Department at 801-799-3000. Anonymous tips can also be sent by text to 274637. Texts should start with TIPSLCPD and include case #15-118351.
