Obama addressed a major union rally in Boston to mark Labor Day. He says he's glad Republicans are trying to rebrand themselves as the party of the middle class. But he says their rhetoric is all talk and no action.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The U.S. is denying reports from local Afghan officials that a NATO airstrike killed 11 police and counter-narcotics agents in southern Afghanistan. A spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan says coalition aircraft carried out no strikes in the southern Helmand province yesterday when the incident allegedly occurred.
BERLIN (AP) — The EU's migration commissioner is praising conditions at Austria's main migrant collection center just a few weeks after a scathing Amnesty International report listing severe human rights violations at the camp. The Amnesty report said overcrowding had forced more than 1,000 people, including unaccompanied children, to camp in the open because of overcrowding, while also noting a lack of health care and other services. None of the camps 3,800 inhabitants are living in the open any more, but about 1,400 are housed in tents.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A new study asks if an end is coming to the busy Atlantic hurricane seasons of recent decades. Writing in the journal Nature Geoscience, two hurricane researchers say the Atlantic looks like it's entering a quieter cycle of storm activity, like in the 1970s and 1980s. Scientists at Colorado State University, including the professor who pioneered hurricane season predictions, say they're seeing a localized cooling and salinity level drop in the North Atlantic near Greenland. They theorize those conditions change local weather and ocean patterns and form an on-again, off-again cycle in hurricane activity.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Small and highly targeted films have taken over a sleepy Labor Day weekend at the box office. Sony's faith-based "War Room" fought its way to first place in its second weekend, earning an estimated $12.6 million across the four-day holiday weekend. New release "A Walk in the Woods," debuted in third place, behind "Straight Outta Compton."
