SALT LAKE CITY — Utahns will soon be getting an official Lyft.
The ride sharing company has registration in Salt Lake City, according to a Wednesday press release from the Utah Department of Commerce.
"We welcome Lyft to the State of Utah and congratulate the company for successfully completing its registration," said Francine A. Giani, the department's executive director.
Using Lyft's app-based ride sharing system, a ride seeker can pick a driver in the area and pay by phone with a credit card.
People interested in making money can apply to be drivers through the app, using their own cars to take riders where they need to go. On its website, Lyft boasts that drivers can make up to $35 an hour simply by giving people a ride.
Lyft's Salt Lake City page reveals the service will operate in an area that ranges from Layton to Provo.
"We have formed a productive relationship with Lyft and look forward to continuing to interact with the company in the future," said Daniel O'Bannon, Utah Division of Consumer Protection director.
