PITTSBURGH (AP) — The man who has led Pittsburgh-based Education Management Corp. as it dealt with declining enrollment and attacks by federal regulators is stepping down.
Edward West was hired as chief financial officer in 2006 and became chief executive officer in 2012. The company, also known as EDMC, announced his resignation "to pursue other interests" on Friday.
The move comes four months after eight directors resigned in a restructuring that saw creditors gain majority control of the company in exchange for cancelling more than $1.3 billion in debt.
The company runs 110 schools in 32 states and Canada for chefs, artists and other trades, including The Art Institutes, Argosy University, Brown Mackie College and South University.
The company is still attempting to settle U.S. Justice Department claims that it illegally used enrollment incentives to pay its recruiters.
