SALT LAKE CITY — A 16-year-old boy was in critical condition Tuesday night after being shot at Liberty Park, police say.
The teen was walking with a female when they were approached by three teenage boys around 7:10 p.m., according to Salt Lake police detective Cody Lougy.
After an altercation, one of the three boys pulled out a gun and shot the 16-year-old, Lougy said.
The crime scene is just north of the YouthCity building in the center of the park, according to police.
Lougy said the teen was transported to the hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound in his chest.
Officers were able to capture one of the three boys, who fled the scene after the shooting. Police were still searching for the other two teens Tuesday night.
Lougy described them as Hispanic males between 14 and 19 years old. One is wearing tan pants and a black shirt with a red Kansas City Chiefs hat, and the other is wearing khaki pants and a gray shirt.
According to Lougy, it's still unclear if the people involved knew each other, but police suspect the incident may be gang-related.
