CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) — Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have broken ground on a new temple in Cedar City.
Community members and church leaders gathered Saturday for the ceremony. The building is one of 173 temples in the world that are operating, under construction or planned.
Church leaders acknowledged the founders of Cedar City, saying they had to endure many hardships when they settled the area more than a century and a half ago.
The construction of the Cedar City temple was announced in April 2013.
It will be open for public tours after its completion and before it's formally dedicated. Those dates haven't yet been announced.
