BOUNTIFUL — Axeon Cycling's Logan Owen won the third stage of the Tour of Utah in another final sprint-finish, posting an official time of 4 hours, 12 minutes and 40 seconds.
The 19-year-old Owen narrowly beat out BMC Racing's Brent Bookwalter, Colombia's Edwin Avila Vanegas and stage-two winner Jure Kocjan of Team SmartStop in a desperate sprint to the finish line on a tightly packed street in Bountiful.
"I knew that I had won, but I couldn't believe it," Owen told the media after the finish. "I was trying to stay as far ahead as possible because I knew that it was fast and a little dangerous. I was making sure that I was up there for the finish and it worked out perfectly."
The win vaults Axeon into the lead in the team standings at 38:57:35, neck and neck with Team Cannondale-Garmin and BMC Racing.
UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling's Kiel Reijnen retained the yellow jersey as the race leader for the third-straight day with an overall time of 12:58:59, four seconds ahead of Owen, Kocjan, Bookwalter and Cannondale-Garmin's Alex Howes.
Owen was named best young rider for the third stage, which went from Antelope Island State Park to Bountiful.
Thursday's stage four runs the Heber Valley loop, starting at Soldier Hollow at 9:45 a.m.
