SALT LAKE CITY — The Heber M. Wells building was briefly evacuated Monday because of smoke on the sixth floor that sent a maintenance worker to the hospital.
Firefighters were called about 11 a.m. to the structure, 160 E. 300 South, when a fire alarm was set off. Smoke was detected on the roof and the top floor, said Salt Lake Fire Capt. Mark Bednarik.
A maintenance worker discovered a short in an electrical box on the roof that controlled the elevators in the building, Bednarik said. The fire was extinguished by the time fire crews arrived. The worker was taken by ambulance to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
More than 100 people were able to get out of the building safely. The Heber Wells Building is home to the Utah Labor Commission.
Traffic on 300 South was shut down for about an hour while crews attended to the incident.
