PROVO — Gov. Gary Herbert reported for jury duty Tuesday but was dismissed by the judge.

"I'm honored to be here and do my civic duty in this small task," the governor told reporters before leaving the 4th District Court, noting he was "not chosen today and who knows exactly why. I have a hunch."

Herbert said it's important for everyone "to step up and fulfill our responsibilities when called to serve" and said his time in court was a good experience that left him feeling good about the judicial process.

In the instructional video shown to prospective jurors, Herbert said it was pointed out that "nobody is exempt from jury duty, including the governor, which brought a little bit of a chuckle to the group."

He was one of 35 potential jurors interviewed for assignment to a case involving driving under the influence. Later Tuesday, the governor departed for a Western Governors' Association meeting in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
