SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Humane Society of Utah is waiving adoption fees on adult cats as they deal with a 60 percent increase in the number of felines dropped off at the shelter.

Shelter officials say they've gotten more than 200 cats so far this month, and they're hoping many will find good homes. Fees will be waived on cats 1 year and older through the end of the month.

Humane Society transfer director Jessica Almeida says there's an urgent need get the animals adopted. The shelter in Murray also expects a wave of some 300 kittens will be ready to adopt from foster homes shortly, and adult cat adoptions tend to decrease when kittens are available.

All adoptable cats are spayed or neutered, have their first set of vaccinations and come with a free veterinary exam.
