Next time you’re at the grocery store, look at the shelves in the yogurt section. What was once a very small selection is now taking up entire sections of real estate in the dairy aisle.

Greek yogurt is the result of regular yogurt with the liquid whey strained from it. But buyer beware, the latest yogurt fad may have you fooled.

Greek yogurt has twice the protein as regular yogurts and the promise of getting extra protein in your diet is enough for some to skip the label. But it’s what’s on the label that could be wreaking havoc on your diet.

Dietitian Stephanie Parker says when trying to decide which Greek yogurt is best for you, consider these five things: saturated fat, added sugars, calories, taste and price.

Look for a Greek yogurt with non-fat or zero percent fat. Foods with saturated fats raise the cholesterol in your blood and can indicate the food is high in calories. Just because it says non-fat yogurt doesn’t mean it’s diet-friendly. Some non-fat yogurts are high in sugar, packing the same amount of sugar as a candy bar. If there is added fruit, added flavors, or has fruit on the packaging you might want to check the label for added sugar.

The heathiest option is to buy non-fat, plain yogurt and add your own fruit. Watch the video to see which Greek yogurts come out on top. The answers may surprise you.
