NEW YORK (AP) — Six is the charm for soprano Kelli O'Hara — she's won her first Tony Award.
O'Hara won for her role as the English school teacher in a revival of the classic 1951 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "The King and I," co-starring Ken Watanabe.
O'Hara received her first Tony nomination for her performance as Clara in Adam Guettel's Tony-winning "The Light in the Piazza" in 2005.
She promptly racked up nominations in the following years for "The Pajama Game," ''South Pacific" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It." Last season she got No. 5 for "The Bridges of Madison County."
O'Hara beat out Kristin Chenoweth from "On the Twentieth Century," Leanne Cope in "An American in Paris," Beth Malone from "Fun Home" and Chita Rivera in "The Visit."
