CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) — Authorities have confirmed that a food handler at Pizza Cart in Cedar City has tested positive for hepatitis A.
The St. George Spectrum reports that a Southwest Utah Public Health Department spokesman said Tuesday that officials don't know how the man contracted the contagious virus, which affects the liver but is not deadly.
Spokesman David Heaton says hepatitis A is spread person to person by feces coming into contact with somebody's mouth, whether through contaminated food or water or another scenario.
Pizza Cart owner Cindy Murray says the employ will not return to work until medically cleared. Other employees have been vaccinated.
She says the health inspector found no violations and said the disease was not contracted from food inside the restaurant.
