ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — After the Anchorage School Board cut about 60 classroom teacher positions from next school year's budget, teachers in the Anchorage School District can be happy knowing they won't be laid off.

The Alaska Dispatch News reports (http://bit.ly/1Gs8AxS ) earlier this month the School Board passed a budget amendment that cut nearly $15.7 million from the 2015-2016 budget.

Last week, the Anchorage School District identified dozens of teachers who would have been displaced because of job cuts or changes in student enrollment and reshuffled them into positions left empty by resignations or retirements.

President of the Anchorage Education Association teachers' union told teachers that positions and programs have been eliminated, but that they would be kept.

The district superintendent says he expects three staff members who are not classroom teachers will be laid off.
