Editor's note: The third passenger in the Neon was originally identified as a 17-year-old boy; however, the third passenger was actually a 15-year-old girl.SANDY — A 17-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl were killed in a collision Wednesday after their vehicle pulled out in front of a Jeep Wrangler on 700 East, police said.
The teenagers were in a westbound Plymouth Neon turning left onto the busy roadway from New England Drive (9657 South) about 7:30 p.m. when they were T-boned by a northbound Jeep Wrangler, said Sandy Police Sgt. Dean Carriger.
Carriger said the Jeep hit the Neon directly between the two sets of doors — the weakest area of most vehicles. The driver and backseat passenger in the car died at the scene, he said.
The impact of the collision caused the Jeep to roll, but police said neither of the two people inside was injured.
Another 15-year-old girl in the Neon was taken to a local hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries, Carriger said.
Names of the victims were not released Wednesday evening. Police don't believe alcohol or excessive speed were factors in the crash.
The crash and subsequent investigation forced the closure of 700 East between 9500 South and 9800 South, and Carriger said the road will likely remain shut down for several hours.
