OAKLEY, Summit Co. — A Boil Water Order was issued Wednesday afternoon for those using the Oakley City water system, according to the Summit County website.

The city is currently working on the issue. Contact the city at 435-783-5734 or visit the website for more information or for drinking water, the city reported.

Oakley City water manager Bob Johnson told KSL coliform was detected during a routine testing.

The boil order affects 550 connections. The cause is still yet to be determined but it is possible that stormwater infiltrated the culinary system, Johnson said.

After tapping a line, a crew ran a fiber optic line a week or so ago and used off-the-shelf chlorine rather than the 65 percent solution chlorine typically used to sanitize pipes, Johnson said.

The city will flush the entire system Thursday and gather more samples. E coli, which is a form of coliform bacteria, could be a risk for people who have weakened immune systems, Johnson said.

If the samples come out clean, the boil order will be lifted. Residents will need to boil their water until city officials lift the order.

The city will deliver bottled water to Elk Meadows Assisted Living and Memory Care at 4200 N. 400 West. as a safety measure, Johnson said.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
