CEDAR FORT, Utah County — A man was killed in an accident involving a garbage truck and a passenger car Tuesday afternoon, causing the closure of state Route 73, the sheriff's office said.

The fatal accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on state Route 73 near Cedar Fort, according to Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon. A garbage truck was driving south on SR-73 when a small passenger car driving northbound drifted into the southbound lane, Cannon said.

The car hit the side of the garbage truck and the male driver of the vehicle was killed on impact, Cannon said. He has not been identified, pending family notification.

The male driver of the garbage truck was not injured in the accident.

"He's pretty shaken up about what happened," Cannon said. "He did his best to try to avoid the collision, but was not able to."

SR-73 was closed in both directions during the cleanup and officials are asking commuters to take alternate routes.

Cannon said it doesn't appear alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
