BOSTON (AP) — One Boston Marathon bombing victim calls the death sentence given convicted bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) "an eye for an eye." Tsarnaev showed little reaction when the penalty was read. The defense had argued that Tsarnaev was a "kid" under the influence of a fanatical older brother. Years of appeals are likely before a lethal injection would be carried out.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal investigators are examining damage on the Amtrak train that derailed in Philadelphia to see if it was hit by an object. The National Transportation Safety Board says an assistant conductor in the cafe car of the Amtrak train said she heard the engineer talking to a regional rail train engineer who said he'd been "hit by a rock or shot at." She says she thought she heard the Amtrak engineer say his train had also been struck. The FBI is investigating. The engineer is said to be cooperative, but has no recollection of what happened.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is expressing condolences to the families of six Marines and two Nepalese army soldiers who were in a helicopter that crashed during an earthquake relief mission in Nepal. Three bodies have been found near the wreckage of the Marine helicopter. The craft had disappeared earlier this week. Extreme weather and difficult terrain are hampering recovery efforts.

WASHINGTON (AP) — District of Columbia police say a married couple, their 10-year-old son and a housekeeper were slain in multimillion-dollar northwest Washington home that was set on fire. Police say at least three of the victims suffered stab wounds or blunt force injuries before the house was set on fire. Police are seeking information about a Porsche belonging to the family that was found last night in suburban Maryland. It had been burned.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health experts say there are a host of problems with the design and cleaning instructions for specialized medical scopes recently linked to a series of bacterial outbreaks in hospitals nationwide. But the Food and Drug Administration's advisers also say the scopes should continue to be used because they are essential to medical care. According to federal officials, since 2013 there have been eight outbreaks of antibiotic-resistant bacteria linked to the devices at U.S. hospitals.
