SALT LAKE CITY — A motorist accused of hitting another vehicle after speeding and running a red light, killing one of the occupants of the car, was convicted Thursday of negligent homicide.
A jury found Carl Holm, 51, of West Jordan, guilty of a class A misdemeanor. A judge ordered he be taken into custody immediately pending sentencing on July 10.
Francisco Garcia Ramirez, 18, was killed in a three-car collision on the Bangerter Highway overpass at state Route 201 in September 2012. Four others, including two men and two juveniles, were also transported to local hospitals with injuries.
Witnesses had observed Holm driving a minivan, swerving in and out of traffic while traveling between 80 and 100 mph. He ran a red light at Bangerter and state Route 201 and hit the Honda Accord that Ramirez was in head-on, according to charging documents. Ramirez was sitting in the front passenger seat.
