HOLLADAY — Unified police are investigating a home invasion robbery late Monday committed by men who broke into an apartment claiming to be a police officer.
The incident happened about 11:15 p.m. at a basement apartment, 4215 S. Holladay Blvd. Four men wearing black hoodies and bandanas over their faces kicked in a door and announced "police" as they entered, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal. One man was armed with a crowbar and another with a gun.
A man and woman were home at the time of the incident. The man was grabbed by his neck and thrown on the floor, Hoyal said. Both were threatened as the intruders went around the apartment taking small electronic devices, he said.
At some point during the robbery, the male tenant broke free and ran out of the apartment, Hoyal said. The man called 911 on a cellphone as he ran from all four of the intruders who chased after him.
Eventually, the four men gave up chasing and quickly disappeared from the area, leading detectives to believe they had a vehicle parked nearby, Hoyal said.
The robbery was not believed to be random, he said, although as of Tuesday afternoon police were still trying to determine a possible connection between the robbers and victims.
"We are looking for a motive in this crime," Hoyal said.
Another home burglary was reported about a block away about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, Hoyal said. But investigators did not believe that incident is related. In that case, the intruder ran off as soon as he was confronted by the homeowner.
