PROVO, Utah (AP0) -- Some Provo elementary school students could soon be reading and writing not just in English, but in Chinese.
The Provo School District has received a six-year grant to fund a Chinese immersion program at Wasatch Elementary School. The school has a year to research and design the program before classes start in fall 2009.
Students in select classrooms -- from kindergarten or first-grade through sixth grade -- will be taught most subjects primarily in Chinese.
District officials say the program will be a first for Utah.
Curriculum Director Todd Billings says the program offers a great cultural opportunity for students.
