(KSL News) -- Bird watching is a popular hobby, and in downtown Salt Lake it has become a little distracting.
If you're walking past the Joseph Smith Memorial building, look up. A family of peregrine falcons has been nesting on the east side of the building this spring.
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has provided a nesting box since 1984 and falcon pairs periodically return to raise their young. This year, a male and female, nicknamed Pee Wee and Wendy, have called the building home and have attempted to "earn their wings."
Volunteers keep watch over the birds and have had to rescue Pee Wee twice after he attempted flight. The bird family has some strong supporters cheering them on.
Elizabeth Hill, 1st Time Bird Watcher: "They were little tiny, and then we watched them toddle, and then we watched them hop, and then we watched them flap their wings and its been so exciting."
