NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Activists in North Charleston, South Carolina, say Saturday's shooting death of a black man by a white police officer could have been prevented, if police had only done a thorough investigation of an earlier incident involving the same officer. A black man who says officer Michael Slager used a stun gun on him two years ago at his home filed a complaint, but Slager was cleared. Witnesses say police never questioned them about what happened.
APPOMATTOX, Va. (AP) — The 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War has been marked today at the spot where Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant. Civil War re-enactors retraced the steps of the two men and their aides entering the McLean House at Appomattox Court House, Virginia -- and their exit 90 minutes later with the terms of surrender. Descendants of the two generals were among those attending today's event.

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. government's highway safety agency may reopen an investigation of Jeep gas tanks that can rupture and cause fires in rear-end crashes. The head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Mark Rosekind, says the agency isn't happy with the Jeep situation and says reopening the probe is among options on the table. Jeep manufacturer Fiat Chrysler agreed to recall 1.56 million older-model Jeep Grand Cherokees and Libertys in 2013 to install trailer hitches to protect the tanks. But Rosekind says he's unhappy with the pace of the repairs.
NEW YORK (AP) — The cost of caring for the elderly continues to climb. An industry survey says the median bill for a private room in a nursing home is now $91,000 a year. The report says the cost has increased four percent every year over the last five years. The annual "Cost of Care" report comes from the insurance company Gemworth Financial.
