SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Republicans who make up most of Utah's congressional delegation aren't rushing to support legislation that would block radioactive Italian waste from being buried in the west desert.

Utah-based EnergySolutions wants to import 20,000 tons of low-level nuclear waste from Italy, bringing 1,600 tons of waste to its facility 80 miles west of Salt Lake City.

Utah's Democratic Rep, Jim Matheson is pushing legislation to block the proposal.

But none of the Republicans -- senators Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett and representatives Rob Bishop and Chris Cannon -- said they backed the legislation when asked by The Salt Lake Tribune.

Matheson says he hasn't yet tried to lobby his colleagues for support.
