(KSL News) -- Those playing on the water this weekend will have to abide by a new Utah law in effect today. Owners of motorboats and personal watercraft must have liability insurance.

Many boaters we spoke with told us they already had it without knowing about the law, and they think it's a good idea.

"It is a good think. I know that personally from having that my sister got run over by a boat about 12 years ago. It's very good to have liability insurance anyway."

The law will be enforced similar to car insurance. If you're pulled over or get in a wreck, police will ask to look at it.
