OREM — Wrestling at 285 pounds, Payson senior Brian Hoschauer doesn’t have a lot of matches come down to the final minute.
When it happened, he knew what to do.
Hoschauer flipped a two-point reversal with about 30 seconds remaining in the final match of the night to earn Payson’s third individual state title and help his team repeat as Class 3A state team champions Saturday at UVU’s UCCU Center.
“That doesn’t happen very often,” Hoschauer said of his last-minute win. “Usually you know pretty early who is going to win. But that was crazy.”
Payson finished with 228.5 points, followed by second-place Juab (172) and Uintah (161.5). Tooele (141) and Desert Hills (133.5) rounded out the top five.
“It’s nice to win a state championship,” Payson coach Jeb Clark said. “There’s no bones about that; it’s just nice to win a championship. We’re happy, and hopefully the town of Payson is happy.”
In the final period of the final match of the 2015 state tournament, Desert Hills’ Trevor Ottenschodt spun around and jumped on top of Hoschauer to take a 4-3 lead over the heavyweight. But the Lion upper classman didn’t stop, fighting through a recently re-torn labrum in his shoulder to come from behind on his Thunder rival and hold on for the 5-4 victory.
“Hoschauer is the hardest worker; for a heavyweight to be one of my hardest workers, that’s a hard thing,” Clark said of his heavyweight, who wrestled his senior season on a re-torn labrum in his shoulder. “But he’s worked hard and through a lot of pain.

I might’ve wanted it more than he did. He’s a bruiser and I love him.”
Josh Jensen won Payson’s first individual state title, beating Uintah’s Kedric Cosnis 10-5 at 126 pounds for the Lion senior’s second state title. Payson also got a title at 145 when Riley Loveless shut out Morgan’s Owen Pentz 7-0 for his second individual championship.
“If anybody knows Josh, he spends all his time wrestling,” Clark said. “He spends a lot of time in the offseason, almost all of it, getting better, and he’s gotten leaps and bounds better ever since he stepped on the mat. He knows how to progress. He’s a good leader for us.”
Payson added second-place finishes with sophomore Jed Loveless at 132, sophomore Chayce Loveless at 152, Payden Osborn at 160 and John Harmon at 182.
Bear River’s Holden Richards opened the 3A finale with a pin over Juab’s Gentry Warner in the 106-pound match. Richfield’s Cameron Richardson upset Pine View’s Drew Hansen with a pin in 3:46 to claim the 113-pound title.
Union’s Wyatt Perry won at 120 with a 12-8 victory over Bear River’s Nick Bingham, and Morgan’s Jordan Pentz earned a first-period pin at 132 for his first state title.
Juan Diego freshman John Manning improved to 37-4 on the year with a 7-1 win over Stansbury’s Jalen Herrera.
Cedar’s Dallin Brooks earned his 50th win over the year with his title at 160 pounds. The senior with a 50-2 record turned a scoreless match going into the final period into a 3-0 win over Payson’s Osborn.
Juab picked up a pair of individual titles with Kolton Lynn’s 6-2 decision at 152 and Brandon Aagard’s 1-0 win at 182.
Desert Hills notched a pair of two-time state champions in the upper weights. Cody Stevenson won his second state title with a pin in 3:02 over Juab’s Tyler Greenhalgh at 195, and Tyler Stevenson added his second individual championship at 220 with a 5-4 win over Uintah’s Aaron Dick.
Payson completed its final season in Class 3A in 2015. The Lions will move to 4A at the beginning of the 2015-16 school year, rejoining Nebo School District rivals Spanish Fork, Springville, Maple Mountain and Salem Hills alongside Uintah and 4A champion Wasatch.
“There was definitely motivation. We’ve worked for this all year,” Hoschauer said. “We always have our goal to win a state championship. To come out here and fulfill that, it’s great.”
