HAMILTON, Mont. (AP) — Healthcare company GlaxoSmithKline has announced a global restructuring that includes closing the vaccine research and development branch of its lab in Hamilton this year.
The Ravalli Republic reports (http://bit.ly/18Ugjau ) company officials told employees about the layoffs on Thursday. The research closure in Hamilton will mean the loss of 27 jobs over the course of the year.
GSK spokeswoman Melinda Stubbee says the company plans to centralize its research and development efforts in one location, but the site has not been decided. The company develops prescription medications and vaccines.
No layoffs were announced for the manufacturing portion of the Hamilton site, which is the sole manufacturing site of an additive called MPL that improves the effectiveness of vaccines.
GSK currently employs 211 people in Hamilton.
