LAS VEGAS (AP) — A subsidiary of casino giant Caesars Entertainment has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in an effort to shed more than half of its $18.4 billion debt burden. Caesar's has been negotiating with creditors and lenders for months on a reorganization plan that would turn the division into a real estate investment trust — one to own properties and the other to lease properties — promising creditors cash or new debt.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — State officials are extending the hours at their health insurance stores so residents can meet another key enrollment deadline. Nevada Health Link's brick-and-mortar stores in Las Vegas and Reno will be open until 9 tonight. Residents must enroll in a health plan by today if they want coverage that takes effect Feb. 1.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A federal fraud trial has been pushed back for a former Las Vegas physician and endoscopy clinic owner already imprisoned in a 2007 hepatitis C outbreak. Attorneys have said they were working on a plea deal for Dipak Desai (DEE'-pahk deh-SEYE'), and the judge has agreed to postpone the trial to at least April 28.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Police say a defendant in a bribery scandal involving California's public pension fund appears to have shot and killed himself at a Nevada gun club. Reno police are investigating the death Tuesday of Alfred Villalobos as an apparent suicide. Villabos' attorney, Bruce Funk, said earlier that his client died after a prolonged illness. He was 71.
