SYRACUSE — A man, who police say fired upon officers and was shot, died Sunday and police identified him Monday.
The officer-involved shooting occurred Thursday around 7 p.m. at 2964 W. 2125 South, according to Syracuse police. Officers responded to the home after a woman called police and requested assistance because her boyfriend was “acting strangely” and had a gun, according to a previous KSL article.
The man, identified as 49-year-old Thomas Hamby, told his girlfriend to leave the home and when police arrived, Hamby emerged from the home and fired at the officers, police said. The officers returned fire and Hamby was shot.
Police did not reveal how many times Hamby was shot, but he was taken to an area hospital by medical helicopter. He remained in the hospital in critical condition and Sunday, he died from injuries sustained in the shooting.
No officers were injured in the incident and the woman was also uninjured. One Syracuse police officer and two Davis County sheriff's deputies involved in the shooting remained on paid administrative leave Monday.
The investigation is ongoing. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
A search of state court records indicates that Hamby has no criminal history in Utah.
The shooting is the second officer-involved shooting fatality in the state so far this year, both of which occurred Thursday. In Salt Lake City, an officer shot and killed an Avenues man who attacked him with a shovel.
