PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — A riderless horse has taken the place of the grand marshal of today's 126th Tournament of Roses parade. The horse represented World War II hero and former Olympian Louis Zamperini, the book and the movie "Unbroken," who died in July at age 97. Zamperini's son, daughter and other family members rode in a car. The theme of today's parade was "Inspiring Stories."
BRINDISI, Italy (AP) — A fire-damaged ferry is now being towed to an Italian port, where it will be searched for possible additional victims. Eleven people are confirmed dead from the fire that broke out early Sunday. But differing estimates of the number of people who were aboard the Greek ferry have raised questions about whether unregistered migrants may have been aboard.
FERNDALE, Calif. (AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey has downgraded an earthquake off the coast of Northern California. The USGS says this morning's magnitude-5.1 quake was centered in the Pacific Ocean, about 70 miles west of Ferndale, south of the Oregon state line. It was originally logged as a magnitude-5.3. No damage or injuries have been reported. The earthquake was about 250 miles northwest of the epicenter of a magnitude-6.0 quake that caused extensive damage in Napa and the surrounding area in August.
PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. (AP) — Investigators say a police chief in Georgia has reported that he accidentally shot his wife. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Peachtree City police Chief William McCollom called 911 early this morning to report the shooting. His wife is in the hospital. The chief has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation and an internal review. Officials say he has been cooperating and no charges have been filed.
CHATHAM, Mass. (AP) — Authorities in Massachusetts say a police officer responding to an emergency call early this morning ran over and apparently killed a college lacrosse player lying in a road on Cape Cod. Police said they don't know why the St. Lawrence University senior, Garrett Gagne, was in the road or what his condition was before he was struck. Police say he was visiting the area to celebrate New Year's Eve with friends.
