WEST WENDOVER, Nev. (AP) — A small plane crashed in the high desert along the Nevada-Utah line, critically injuring the pilot and injuring his passenger. Elko County Undersheriff Clair Morris says pilot Paul Bowden was practicing takeoffs and landings Thursday night at the Wendover Airport in Utah when his Cessna crashed. Paul Bowden and Marnie Bowden were hospitalized.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says "right-wing wackos in Utah" are responsible for removing his name from an outdoor-recreation center at his alma mater in Utah. But Southern Utah University President Scott Wyatt says he decided to strike Reid's name due to confusion about the center's purpose because no one associated Reid with the outdoors.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — The U.S. Senate has passed a bipartisan package of land bills to promote economic development in northern Nevada while protecting some unspoiled sites as wilderness areas. One of the measures allows the sale of about 10,000 acres of federal land to Yerington to support development of Nevada Copper's mine and other industrial projects while creating the 48,000-acre Wovoka Wilderness.
ELY, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada sheriff says a 63-year-old man who had been sought in the shooting death of his wife and torching of their home was found dead. White Pine County Sheriff Dan Watts says Bruce Wayne Hendrix died of a self-inflicted gunshot. Hendrix's body and vehicle were found near Shingle Pass in Lincoln County. He had been sought after the body of his 57-year-old wife, Julia Hendrix, was found Monday in the couple's burned-out home.
