SALT LAKE CITY — BYU took down Hawaii Saturday afternoon 90-70 at EnergySolutions Arena behind an impressive night from junior guard Kyle Collinsworth, who had a triple-double with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

“Credit to my teammates,” Collinsworth said, “We have such great shooters that it makes it really easy to get an assist being a point guard so, credit to my teammates.”

Collinsworth is the first BYU player to have a triple-double since Michael Smith in 1988 and only the fourth player in BYU basketball history to record a triple-double.

“It is a great honor. I look forward to getting more of them and to continue to get better as a team and as an individual.”

Collinsworth has seen limited minutes at the start of the season due to ACL surgery last season, but head coach Dave Rose can see his confidence growing,

“I love the way he plays. He is getting more and more confidence. I think that with him having the ball in his hands when he is driving in the lane he is making really good decisions and is able to finish. But what I think is really impressive is his ability to rebound,” Rose continued. “Today, he got a lot of minutes where he was forced down on that baseline because we played four guards, and with one big guy in there so he was responsible for a lot of those offside rebounds and he grabbed a lot of them, so it was a good game and we needed him. I am happy for him."

Chase Fischer, junior guard for the Cougars, said of Collinsworth, “(His triple-double) was awesome. He is a great player. He does that almost every game. … He just opens up so much — our rebounding, passing, scoring — so he is an amazing player. I think just his leadership that he brings to us every day is even bigger. But no surprise to us that he got a triple-double. He is a big-time player.”

Collinsworth was not the only impressive Cougar in the win over Hawaii. BYU had four players in double figures. Tyler Haws totaled 30 points and seven rebounds. Chase Fischer added 20 points, five rebounds and five assists. Anson Winder added 11 points.

“I think the biggest difference (compared to other years) is the consistency,” Rose said. “If you look at our teams the past three, four, five years, we have got multiple guys who have scored 20-plus points on different nights at different times. I think this group here, we have consistently got a really good group of scorers.”

BYU will now look to No. 25 Utah as it plays the Utes back at the Marriott Center Wednesday. Fischer said of the BYU-Utah rivalry game, “They are a really good team this year and it will be a great opportunity for us, so I am excited to be a part of that. … It is awesome to play in a big-time game every year with two good teams.”

BYU-Utah will tip-off Wednesday at 7 p.m.
