SALT LAKE CITY — The Division of Wildlife Resources recently launched a new app to make fishing and hunting licenses more accessible.

The Utah Hunting and Fishing app was created to allow hunters and anglers to download and keep their licenses on their phone and tablets, according to DWR business analyst Phillip Gray. Along with having easier access to their license, the app also lets sportsmen know when their license has expired by changing from green to red, Gray said.

The downloaded license on the app can be used for confirmation with field officers, Gray said. However, while the app works for most licenses, Gray said some big game still have to be tagged with paper licenses and anglers should check their hunting permit.

The app provides links to several resources including a link to buy or renew a license. It also shows the boundaries that match each user’s hunting permit and displays the legal shooting hours for each day of the year. The app also helps identify fish species, upland game species and waterfowl species that have special hunting regulations.

Gray said the next version of the app will have PDFs of the guidebooks with rules and field regulations.

“It is convenient for them to have it right there,” Gray said. “Myself personally, I have four or five different copies of the fishing guide. One in my tackle box. One in my car. One in my vest so it’s always there with me. And now I don’t have to do that because I can pack it around on my mobile device.”

The Utah Hunting and Fishing app is available on Android and iPhone.
