On Veterans Day, Americans everywhere will reflect on the tremendous sacrifices made by their fellow countrymen in defense of the country. Here are three war movies to honor those who have bravely fought on battlefields all over the world.
“Saints and Soldiers”
After surviving the Malmedy Massacre, three American soldiers save a British pilot and make their way to reach Allied forces before another German attack. In the process of making their way to prevent another massacre, the four men share inner facts about themselves. “Saints and Soldiers” is an intimate movie detailing the human side of a terrible war in which millions of people were killed.
“Joyeux Noel”
World War I was one of the bloodiest and costliest wars in the history of the world. With the new inventions of tanks and machine guns, killing people had never been so efficient and easy in the history of mankind. Against this brutal backdrop comes the heartwarming story of “Joyeux Noel,” where soldiers from competing armies order a cease-fire for Christmas and fraternize with each other and even enjoy a friendly game of soccer. “Joyeux Noel,” like “Saints and Soldiers,” is a powerful reminder to viewers that these were real people fighting these wars.
“Lincoln”
Not strictly a war movie per se, “Lincoln” is still one of the best films about the politics of the Civil War and what was being fought for. In the film, President Lincoln is seeking to reunite the United States of America without the slavery that had been commonplace in the Southern states. Lincoln’s political savvy is on full display in the film as his amendment to the Constitution outlawing slavery is passed. Daniel Day-Lewis once again knocks the ball out of the park with his portrayal of Lincoln. Watch Lincoln to remember the great sacrifices that so many made to truly make the United States the land of the free.
