LAS VEGAS (AP) — Republican challenger Cresent Hardy has defeated Democratic incumbent Rep. Steven Horsford in the closely watched race for Nevada's 4th congressional district.

Based on early voting returns Hardy successfully unseated Horsford Tuesday.

The race to represent an area that spans the middle of Nevada including North Las Vegas was considered a lock for Horsford until recently.

A hefty boost from more than $1 million spent by national Republican donors opposing Horsford and supporting Hardy in the days leading up to the election may have swung the election in Hardy's favor.

Until then Hardy had struggled to raise funds and recover from gaffes including reiterating an unpopular statement made by former presidential candidate Mitt Romney referring to 47 percent of the country relying on government assistance.
