LEEDS, Utah (AP) -- A brush fire that threatened some homes and briefly shut down Interstate 15 in southern Utah is under control.
The fire started near Interstate 15 and moved quickly east toward Leeds, which is about 15 miles northeast of St. George.
Nearby homes were evacuated before the winds died down and the fire stopped its forward movement, said LaCee Bartholomew, a fire spokeswoman for the Bureau of Land Management.
Bartholomew said the fire burned about 60 acres, got close enough to burn under some decks, but no damage was reported and no one was injured.
Embers from the blaze entered an open storage unit and burned the contents, said Steve Lewis, fire chief for the Leeds area fire and rescue.
Smoke from the fire caused northbound lanes of I-15 to be shutdown for a few minutes as smoke impaired visibility on the road, said Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Jeff Nigbur.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
