LAS VEGAS (AP) — Officials at a private Christian school in Las Vegas are objecting to a new neighbor a few doors away: a store that sells sex toys and fetish lingerie.
Lone Mountain Academy Principal Larry Henderson said his job is to protect his students and The Love Store should not have been allowed anywhere near kids.
He said he realizes the vast majority of people shopping there would never harm a child, but there's still a chance the store could draw sexual deviants near his school.
"A lot of times within pornography they are degrading women, there is brutality within that environment," Henderson told KLAS-TV.
"I'm concerned with people coming in there, viewing that kind of material, purchasing that kind of material and being within such a close proximity to kids. There are children all up and down this area," he added.
The shop's owner did not immediately return a phone call for comment on Sunday.
Under Las Vegas zoning ordinances, an adult bookstore is not allowed within 1,000 feet of a church or school.
But a city spokesperson said The Love Store is allowed to operate next door as a general retailer because less than 35 percent of its revenue comes from adult material.
Jimmy Morales, senior pastor at Calvary Chapel, said they were lied to about what the store would be from the beginning. The school is affiliated with the church.
"If it was truly an upscale lingerie store, then no problem. But what moved in was neither upscale nor lingerie," he told KLAS.
