BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho's gubernatorial candidates are honing their campaign messages as election season enters the homestretch. Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter's political ads have largely focused on his involvement during his past two terms in improving Idaho's economy after it fell during the Great Recession. Democratic candidate A.J. Balukoff's campaign ads promise he will make education a priority.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Federal officials say the percentage of Idaho students attending public four-year universities who are defaulting on their student loans is increasing. But the U.S. Department of Education also says Idaho's rate of 13.1 percent is below the national average of 13.7 percent. College officials tell the Idaho Statesman that rising college costs, low Idaho wages and students borrowing too much could be contributing to the increase in default rates in Idaho.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A group that overcame a court challenge last winter to hold a wolf- and coyote-shooting derby is seeking a permit from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to roughly double the area for a second event this winter. Steve Alder of Idaho for Wildlife says the tentative dates for the derby in the east-central part of the state are Jan. 2-3.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — A northern Idaho man has died after his vehicle went off U.S. Highway 95 and into the Salmon River. The Idaho State Police say 77-year-old John Wilson of Kooskia was northbound when his car crossed the centerline and went off the left shoulder at about 9 a.m. Sunday. The vehicle went down an embankment and into the river near the town of Lucille.
